i’m still alive!

I know it’s been a long time since I last blogged. I simply never made time for updates, especially after coming back from vacation. I had about 3 days to recover before starting work again and, due to the Christmas season, I had to spring into Xmas mode almost instantly. It was a bit difficult adjusting from pure relaxation to extreme chaos, but I managed to meld it together gracefully. I used my days off to select, print out, and put together photos for my photo album. Following that project, I put together an online photo journal for the trip. I was well occupied, and I guess that was my way of coping with post-vacation depression.

I still do silly things like checking out the QM2’s bridge cam to see where they are each day or keeping myself up to date with recent Cunard news. I scream (silently) whenever I see anything with the QM2 on it (i.e. books, magazines, shows). There’s been a couple nights where I couldn’t fall asleep in bed, so I tried to make myself feel the slight rocking that I had felt while sleeping on the ship. hahaha It’s kind of funny actually.

After spending ten days with Georgia, it was a bit weird returning home to our normal lives. I kind of missed seeing her everyday. Sometimes a thought would cross my mind and I’d turn to tell her, only to find that she wasn’t there. We really had a lot of fun during our vacation. *Thanks for being an awesome travel buddy!! :)

So what’s been happening since then? Well…let’s see…

This was two days after we came back. Georgia and I went out for lunch at Memories of Japan; we missed having sushi because we barely had it while we were away. Then we went to Chapters to pay everyone a visit. There we found Susie and later ran into Nicole, so we all sat down to catch up. I can’t believe Nicole’s getting married!! Congrats!

Dinner with Georgia, Susie and Omar at a Mediterranean restaurant in which the name escapes me. We had so many stories from the cruise to share. It felt nice to come back to the company of some good friends.

After work, I went out for dinner at The Keg with Tommy to celebrate his birthday. It was also the dinner that I owed him from losing a bet. See, I kept my word…didn’t I?

Zahra’s Farewell. This was her farewell party before she moved back to California. She had always been one of my favourite managers and I had worked with her for so long. It was sad to see her leave.

I couldn’t miss the 3rd Annual Chapters Get-Together at Cajun Bajun because I’d already missed the first two and I knew people would murder me if I did. I was glad to have went. It was nice seeing some old faces there and I just loved the atmosphere. Like the name of the restaurant suggests, it’s very Caribbean style. It totally reminded me of our trip. The chicken fingers I had were SO GOOD! I’ll have to go back for some more one of these days.

From there on, I pretty much worked my way through December. I had a few days off here and there. And then there was the snow storm that kept me home. I also made a rational decision to go back to school in January. Despite my hopes of traveling after finishing school, I chose to wait on the traveling to further my studies in something completely different from what I had studied before: Travel & Tourism. Yes, the cruise really influenced me. haha I’ll only be doing part time to complete the certificate program; I really don’t believe I can handle going back to school full time right now. I feel that this is something I’m passionate about (I never felt that way with Fashion Merchandising). There’s no stress in making this a career; I see it more so as gaining knowledge to enrich myself. This time I’ll be studying for pleasure as opposed to studying because I need to complete something I had already started. It’ll be good.

I worked the closing shift at Chapters on Christmas Eve to set up for Boxing Day. I think I’ve done that almost every year for as long as I’ve been with the company. This year, it went by very quickly and painlessly (besides my awful back pains). After wrapping up, a bunch of us went out for dinner at the Perfect Chinese Restaurant. I had no idea there was a 24-hour Chinese restaurant in Scarborough. I enjoyed the food and the company.

I had a very short Christmas this year. I worked the closing shift at Chapters and then had to work the opening shift on Boxing Day. I managed to find a bit of time to relax on Christmas day before cooking dinner for my family. It’s a tradition I started 2 years ago. I was so busy this season that I really didn’t have the energy to be very creative. I simply made my Pasta Salad, Mashed Potatoes, Meatballs with Honey Garlic BBQ Sauce & Cranberries (I didn’t mix the sauce into it because I wasn’t sure everyone would like it), Chicken Teriyaki, and Green Beans.

For the first time in years, Vanesa stayed in town for the holiday season, which meant I actually got to celebrate her birthday WITH her for once.  It was a very very busy day at work and I had been running around all day like a headless chicken.  When I met up with Vanesa and Tim for dinner, I was so glad to see them.  We went for Shabu Shabu and just enjoyed a quiet evening together catching up.
